Scrying For the Complete Beginner: How to Scry Without Struggling

In this article, you will learn how to scry in a way that’s perfect for beginners. The exercises in this text are the result of over 25 years of experience. They require no prior training and are relatively easy to learn. These exercises will give you the foundation to practice any kind of scrying. This includes black mirror, scrying bowl, and crystal ball gazing. Learning how to scry isn’t nearly as hard as many believe and can be learned in a matter of weeks with practice.

In this article, we will look at a very effective scrying technique: the 61 points of relaxation combined with the ganzfeld method. When these two techniques are practiced together, you will have a powerful tool for scrying. Take your time to learn them and you won’t be disappointed.

Why you should learn how to scry?

Scrying is an ancient practice that is found in virtually every culture. In Ancient Greece, mystics would meditate in caves to induce visionary and meditative trances. This practice is found in several cultures including India.

In the West, these types of practices became tools for divination, prophecy, and spirit contact. Two prominent examples of scrying in Western history are from the Renaissance. The first is physician Michel de Nostredame (December 14, 1503 – July 2, 1566), better known as Nostradamus. His book, The Prophecies, earned him worldwide fame as a seer. To this day it is a remarkable account of prophetic visions that grip readers to this day. He would gaze into a bowl filled with water and herbs by candlelight. The resulting trancelike visions formed the basis of his predictions. This is one famous example of hydromancy or water scrying.

The second example is from the works of John Dee (13 July 1527 – 1608 or 1609), court astrologer and magician to Queen Elizabeth I. His seer Edward Kelly (1 August 1555 – 1597/8) used a crystal sphere called a shewstone and an obsidian mirror. Their experiments would lead to them contacting angels. These occult experiments would lead to the Enochian system that is practiced by many occultists.

Today most scryers in the western world fall into two main categories: psychics and mediums, and occultists. Psychics and mediums make use of crystal balls and other scrying tools for making predictions and contacting spirits. However, other psychics may use scrying to explore past lives or spiritual worlds.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (12 August 1831 – 8 May 1891) was one such a psychic. Co-founder of the Theosophical Society in 1875, Blavatsky regularly used a crystal ball for scrying. Her visions and spiritual experiences would have a massive influence on the Western mystical tradition.

Occultists also use scrying tools for contacting spirits and divination. However, the goal of scrying is for the practice of magick. This includes not only for evocation and divination but exploring the metaphysical worlds. How to scry is essential for certain occult practices.

Aleister Crowley (12 October 1875 – 1 December 1947) to be the most influential occultist of the 20th Century. His exceptional scrying ability culminated in a work called The Vision and the Voice. These sets of visions were recorded in 1900 and 1909 and are very influential. They were an extensive exploration Of John Dee’s Enochian system mentioned previously.

As you can see, scrying is a very powerful spiritual tool, alongside learning how to astral project. Many occultists and would-be psychics try to learn how to scry, but the majority give up. This isn’t because scrying is difficult, but because it’s often taught wrong.

The importance of deep relaxation

Deep relaxation is the most important, yet the most neglected skill for learning how to scry Trying to skip relaxation by going straight to gazing will almost always fail. Insufficient relaxation is the main reason why beginners fail, so this skill must be trained.

To understand just how deeply you must relax, we will take a look at the various brain wave states. This will help you pinpoint exactly how deep you must relax and what to aim for. The various brainwave states are separated by how quickly they oscillate; the slower the oscillation, the more relaxed the person is. We will look at 4 of them: beta, alpha, theta, and delta.

Beta (12-38 HZ)

Beta brainwaves are dominant when you’re wide awake, and engaged in cognitive tasks in the outside world. These brainwaves oscillate the fastest you use them during, problem-solving, decision making, or anything requiring mental focus.

Alpha (8-12 HZ)

You brain produces alpha brainwaves when you are calm, relaxed, or in a light meditative state. When these brainwaves are dominant you are far more creative, and visualization becomes vivid. The deeper states of alpha can result in very deep states of relaxation which can result in dream-like images.

Theta (3-8 HZ)

You produce theta brainwaves during light sleep and VERY deep states of relaxation and meditation. The upper levels of theta brainwaves, near alpha, are on the very edge of sleep. Lower theta states correspond to deeper states of sleep and are very difficult to use for scrying.

Delta (0.5-3HZ)

Delta brainwaves oscillate the slowest. Your brain produces them during comas, very deep sleep, and the deepest levels of trance. This article doesn’t use this brainwave state to initiate visions. The reason for this is that the lack of awareness makes it difficult to use in such a direct manner.

From the description of alpha and theta brainwaves. Theta brainwaves are hard to produce via meditation and relaxation techniques. Fortunately, alpha brainwaves aren’t. I mentioned previously, if your brain produces enough alpha brainwaves you start to dreamlike images. This is more than sufficient to train you to see mental imagery

Ganzfeld scrying

The following scrying method uses two key techniques:

  1. The 61 points of relaxation developed by Swami Rama
  2. The ganzfeld effect discovered by psychologist Wolfgang Metzger

I learned about the 61 points of relaxation of Swami Rama, in Stephen LaBerge’s Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming. This technique is one example of a variety of yogic techniques that produce deep relaxation.

The technique in this article involves meditating on different parts of the body. By mentally relaxing these areas the entire body becomes relaxed, which results in the brain producing more alpha brainwaves.

Psychology also makes use of similar relaxation techniques. These include progressive relaxation and self-hypnosis, and autogenic training. I have used several of these techniques but found they are less effective than most yogic techniques. You can find guided meditations available online that teach yoga nidra. This is among the best relaxation techniques available. If you wish to explore this route, there are audio recordings that can be very effective.

The technique in this article involves mentally scanning 61 points arranged along the body. These points follow a very logical pattern and aren’t hard to memorize. This induces deep physical relaxation that will deepen even further the more you practice it. We will then use the ganzfeld effect to teach you how to scry.

The ganzfeld effect is an extremely effective technique used in laboratories for psi research for decades. Gestalt psychologist Wolfgang Metzger discovered it in the 1930s. Arctic explorers caught in blizzards for days reported seeing images in the snow. Also, miners trapped underground for days phenomena experienced the same thing. Metzger was well-aware of these occurrences and replicated them in the laboratory for research purposes. He called this the ganzfeld effect meaning ‘total’ or ‘complete’ field in German.

The early experiments in the ganzfeld effect were conducted at the Berlin City Palace. These experiments consisted of participants facing a blank illuminated wall while listening to static noise. The participants consistently entered dreamlike states where they would hallucinate. These states were remarkably similar to those found during the hypnogogic stage of sleep.

Scientists later found that when someone experiences the ganzfeld effect, their brain starts producing large amounts of alpha brainwaves. This is the key reason as to why people experience such a dreamlike state during this procedure. The ganzfeld effect produces what scientists call a hypnogoid state that makes this possible.

Later experiments in parapsychology were specifically aimed at producing psychic phenomena in laboratories. They believed that the images produced during deep relaxation can be influenced. This may provide proof of psychic abilities. The findings concerning these studies are beyond this article but are available online.

The ganzfeld experiments were mostly abandoned until 1964 where it experienced a resurgence. The experiment was updated and modernized and follows a strict methodology. The experiment begins with the participant sitting in a reclining chair while performing a relaxation exercise. Halved and ergonomically shaped ping pong balls are placed over the eyes and red light is then shined over their face while they listen to white, pink, or brown noise.

How to scry using the ganzfeld effect

You don’t have to follow such a strict protocol to learn how to scry. To perform it yourself, you need the following:

– A piece of paper and some cotton to make a ganzfeld mask.

– A bed or a comfortable sofa.

– A desk lamp with a bulb that is not too bright (red or white is fine).

– A recording of pink or brown noise that can be found online.

How to make a ganzfeld mask

  1. Use the paper template included in the picture below to cut out your mask. Use simple blank typing paper, don’t use cardboard or any paper with lines, pictures, smudges, etc. The paper must be as clean as possible.
  2. Poke holes on the right and left sides of the piece of paper and thread some elastic through the holes. Secure the mask to your face during the exercise using the elastic. Glue bits of cotton around the edges to help block out light. You can reuse the same mask until it becomes dirty, then you can make a new one in a couple of minutes.

You can easily find a recording of pink noise online. I recommend using a 1-hour recording. This exercise takes far less time, about 15 – 20 minutes, but a longer recording will ensure you can practice for as long as you want. Make sure you’re using pink or brown noise; white noise sounds too harsh. Don’t use rain sounds, waterfalls, music, etc., the sound must be completely uniform. Also, avoid using binaural beats or any kind of brainwave entrainment. These interrupt the ganzfeld effect and it won’t work properly.

Before starting the exercise lie down and place the mask over your face. Adjust the nose hole to make sure your face is completely covered with no beams of light shining through. If you gaze forward, you must only see a blank white field. Then you’re ready to begin.

Lie down on your bed or sofa, put on your mask with the lamp above your head and light shining directly over your face. Listen to your recording over headphones or earbuds and make sure that all other sound is blocked out. You are ready to learn how to scry.

Close your eyes and start doing the following relaxation exercise:

The 61 points of relaxation

Step 1

Take a deep breath and tense your right arm. Let go of your breath and release all tension in your arm. Repeat this with the left arm. Do this a second time. Now perform this tensing and relaxing with the right leg, then the left leg, and repeat this a second time

Proceed towards tensing and relaxing both arms simultaneously, two times in a row, followed by both legs.

Now tense and relax the right arm and leg simultaneously, followed by the left arm and leg. Repeat this a second time.

Finally, tense and relax both of the arms and both of the legs at the same time, and do this again a second time.

Step 2

Bring your awareness to your body and move your awareness from area to area by using the picture below as a guide. Begin with area 1 and proceed towards the next one. The areas follow a simple and easy to remember pattern, so don’t be intimidated by the seemingly complex arrangement of the numbers you see on the picture. Visualize a small star in the area as you move from point to point. Pay attention to the area on your body for about 1 to 2 seconds. Start with the first 31 points at first, and once you memorized them, include the other areas. You can repeat this more than once if you want to.

Ganzfeld scrying exercise

Step 1.

After you have rotated your awareness through your body in the exercise above, open your eyes and look straight ahead of you.

Step 2.

Stay relaxed and just gently gaze into the blank field ahead of you. Adopt a similar attitude as someone who is trying to take a nap and just let yourself drift in a relaxed state. However, keep your eyes open for the time being.

Step 3.

As this continues let whatever thoughts or images emerge on their own just like you are daydreaming. These dreamlike images will become more vivid as you relax more. Stay in this dreamlike state as long as you want. If you notice your eyes beginning to close, gently open them. Just lie still in this relaxed state for as long as you want to, then end the exercise by slowly getting up.

This exercise is among the simplest and easiest ways to perform scrying. Learning how to scry in this manner lays the foundation for other forms of scrying. In an upcoming article, I will show you how to scry with virtually any tool. You will be able to scry with a black mirror, scrying bowl, crystal ball, or any other medium.
